Here is a guide for creating a basic lead generation funnel. This is the same kind of funnel that I made when I first started.
The structure includes an opt-in page followed by a thank-you page, and then an automated email sequence. Apply this to affiliate marketing, coaching, digital products, courses, and more.
Now, let's start building it.
Step 1: Create Your Funnel

Inside your dashboard, click on "Sites", then "Sales Funnels", then "Create".
You'll see different funnel goals.
For your first funnel, choose "Build an Audience". This automatically creates an opt-in page and thank-you page for you.

Name your funnel something clear, like "Lead Magnet Funnel" or "Free Guide Funnel."
Pick your currency. Click Save.
Boom. Your funnel framework is created.
Step 2: Pick Your Landing Page Template

Make your button text benefit-driven:

Never just say "Submit." That's boring and tells them nothing.
Add trust elements if you want: Bullet points listing what they'll get, a preview image of the lead magnet, or a quick testimonial if you have one.
Click Save in the top right corner before you move on.

Step 4: Upload Your Lead Magnet
Your lead magnet is the free thing you're giving away. It could be a:
PDF guide or checklist
video training
template or worksheet
mini email course
cheat sheet
Whatever you choose, ensure it addresses a specific problem your audience has.
Upload your file by going to Assets → Files → Upload Files in your dashboard. You'll link to this later in your thank-you page or first email.
Another option is to upload your files to an external source, such as Google Drive, and include a link to that in your thank-you page or first email.

Step 5: Design Your Thank You Page
Go back to your funnel view and select the "Thank You Page" step on the left-hand side of your screen. Choose your preferred template and then click on "Edit Page".

This page serves multiple purposes:
Confirms the person successfully signed up
Delivers the lead magnet (or tells them to check email)
Keeps the momentum going
Optionally promotes an offer
Here's what you can include:
A warm thank you message: "Thanks for signing up! Check your inbox in the next few minutes for your free guide."
A next step: "While you're here, check out this quick video..." or "I break these ideas down even further in my blog articles. Explore them when you’re ready...."
An optional soft pitch: This is where you can mention other resources or tools. For example, you could add: “If this guide resonated with you, you might enjoy the free resources and insights I share with my community.” and then link to your community/membership site created in Systeme.io.
Maintain a tone that is friendly and helpful while avoiding being pushy.
Save your page and we'll move to the email automation.
Step 6: Set Up Your Email Sequence

This is where email marketing shows its strength.
Go to Emails → Campaigns → Create.
Name your campaign something like "Lead Magnet Welcome Series."
Now create your first email.
Email #1: Deliver the Lead Magnet
Subject: "Here's your free guide"
Body structure:
Thank them for signing up
Give them the download link
Tell them what to expect next
Add a personal touch (quick intro or story)
Example:

Email #3: Make an Offer
Send this several days later. This could be:
Your own product or course
An affiliate product you love
A coaching offer
A webinar invitation
Write it like you're recommending something to a friend. Be genuine. Explain why it's valuable and who it's for.
Create 3-5 emails in your sequence and schedule them to send every 3-5 days. Don’t spam their inbox.

After composing your emails, to activate and choose the delay for when they'll get sent, click on the three dots on the right and fill in the options accordingly.
Step 7: Connect Your Funnel to Your Email Campaign
Almost done. Now we need to tell Systeme.io to automatically add new subscribers to your email sequence.
Go to your funnel and click Automation Rules → Add Rule.

Set it up like this:
Trigger: Funnel Step Form Subscribed
Action: Subscribe to Campaign → Select your campaign
Save the rule

This means anyone who opts in gets added to your email list and receives your automated sequence.
Everything runs on autopilot now.
Test Everything Before Going Live
Don't skip this part. Test your entire funnel yourself.
Go through these checks:
Does the landing page load properly?
Does the form actually collect emails?
Does it redirect to the thank-you page?

Do all links work?
Does everything look good on mobile?
Fill out your own form with a test email. Make sure every step works exactly how it should.
Finding a broken link after sending traffic is not fun, trust me.

Keep your landing page as simple as possible. Remove everything that doesn't help someone decide to opt in. Less distraction = more sign-ups.
Make your lead magnet solve one urgent problem. Not ten problems. One. Something they need help with right now.
Use specific, benefit-driven button text. "Get My Free Guide" is better than "Submit" every time.
Add urgency if it makes sense. Limited-time bonus, early access, fast-action guide. These elements create a sense of urgency without being manipulative.
Follow up consistently. Most people won't buy on day one. Your sequence of emails helps to establish trust as time goes on. That's when the real money is made.

I've seen these mistakes kill so many funnels. Don't let them kill yours.
Overcomplicating everything. You don't need multiple pages and several products. Start with one simple funnel that actually works.
No clear offer. Every page should have one obvious next step. If people don't know what to do, they'll do nothing.
Boring, feature-focused copy. Nobody cares that your course has "8 modules." They care that it'll help them quit their job or make their first $1000 online.
